Large Antique French Glazed Walnut Oil Jar
Price

£295.00

A stunning antique French Terracotta or Earthenware pot-bellied walnut oil jar (pot a huille). This is a very large example dating from the 18th or early 19th century and is in very good condition for it's age, the only loss being to one of the 3 handles. Likely originating from the Dordogne Valley (Périgord) region of France, these pots were decorated to resemble the outer shell of a walnut. Walnut oil was frequently used for both cooking and also as a fuel. Characterized by a mottled dark glaze with looped handles and a side spout. We have had a few of these and they are always popular but this is the largest and best example we have found to date. A very special decorative piece that will add character to any home.
